Start with the room’s operating conditions
A cold store or freezer room is not an ordinary hall with thicker panels. An enquiry needs the planned internal temperature, ambient conditions, purpose and operating method. Washing, goods movement and connections to zones at different temperatures also matter. This information should reach the designer specifying the envelope and the contractor planning installation.
Ruukki describes room-within-a-room solutions and the importance of limiting air and moisture transfer and thermal bridges. Structural penetrations through the envelope require detailed solutions. One panel’s performance does not describe the whole room. Ruukki — cold store envelope solutions.
Sealing at interfaces between components
Key questions concern wall-to-floor and wall-to-ceiling junctions, corners, doors and service penetrations. System documentation should identify the vapour control layer, seal type and continuity around corners. Do not copy a standard façade wall detail merely because it looks similar externally.
For Coldstore panels, Kingspan describes seals associated with vapour control and hygiene requirements. The variant, side and continuity of sealing must suit the installed system and design. Kingspan — K-PIR Coldstore, joints and seals.
The ceiling is a separate scope to check
- Agree the support or suspension structure and responsibility for its design.
- Identify all planned penetrations, lights and components installed by other trades.
- Separate envelope loads from services and process equipment loads.
- Record maintenance access conditions; do not assume the ceiling can be walked on.
- Plan joint inspections before subsequent work conceals them.
Process and hygiene coordination
Before installation, compile a coordinated openings drawing. A later penetration introduced by the refrigeration or electrical trade requires the detail to be reassessed. The envelope installer should not independently change a design solution. For washed zones, identify cleaning chemicals, coatings and maintenance rules suited to the actual supplied product.
Ruukki’s coating maintenance materials provide separate use and repair instructions. Before handover, give the operator documentation for the selected solution rather than arbitrary instructions for another panel family. Ruukki — coatings and maintenance instructions.
What to send to Panel Montage
Prepare dimensioned room plans, sections, wall and ceiling schedules, design temperatures and available details. State whether the building is new or production is operating, and who is responsible for materials, structure and services. Panel Montage quotes the agreed envelope installation scope. Refrigeration equipment, controls and process design require separate allocation.
Questions for the coordination meeting
Walk through the goods route together and mark where the envelope meets equipment, doors or services. Record an owner and approval date for each detail. Then check whether the connection will remain accessible after the next trade’s installation. This simple method reveals issues requiring early decisions and helps establish the work sequence and photographs needed before concealment. Room performance checks should be planned according to the documentation and assigned to the responsible project participants.
